We recently spent the Easter weekend in Stillbaai – and all the seaside bliss has left us wanting more!! Here is our guide on what to do and see in Stillbaai.

Stillbaai is the sweetest coastal town – winning the the title of “2019 Town of the Year” in the Western Cape, South Africa. And if the wild ocean views, surf spots and quirky cafes didn’t give it away already, this town is the start to the infamous Garden Route.

Jongensfontein Campsite

10kms West of Stillbaai town lies one of our favourite coastal campsites. You can set up camp on a lush lawn for an affordable price, while enjoying a beautiful beach and tidal pool right on your doorstep.

Our little family of campers

The campsite has a lot to offer. We spent most mornings going for a jog along the beach road just outside the campsite. This road has all the traditional holiday homes to the right with all the surf spots and fisherman to the left.

Jongensfontein beachfront

The beach in front of the campsite is open to anyone. It is a great spot to take a swim or a scenic walk. There is a pathway going off to the left which offers a beautiful trail along the rocky coastline.

Each evening we would take a sundowner or grab an ice-cream from the beach shop next door and go walking along the trail. Turns out that dassies also love a good sunset stroll.

Inverroche Gin Distillery

We love gin – and when we discovered that the Inverroche Distillery was in Stillbaai it literally made our day. The gin tasting and distillery show rooms were as aesthetically pleasing as they were delicious. Definitely worth a visit (and probably an Uber).

Stillbaai Beach

Although we prefer the small intimate beach infront of our campsite, or the extensive secluded beach at Baardbos – the Stillbaai main beach is still a great spot – filled with all the sun kissed families, surfers and kite surfers.

Stillbaai Town

This small town is so adorable. Small church markets, dozens of secondhand store treasures and a handful of hearty Afrikaans cafes!

Baardbos Private Game Reserve

Just a short drive from Jongersfontein – this reserve is a natural wonder. We took a semi-4×4 and drove out in search of Blombos Cave.

This reserve is super out the way or “off the beaten track”. We put ‘blombos cave’ on our maps and ended up driving through a few farmlands and arriving at this incredible entrance:

As we got to the bottom of this path we met a few locals from the private properties to the right. They told us the cave had been semi-closed up with fencing and was also a 2 hour return hike across the beach. Short of time we decided to rather wander straight ahead >> into these magical tidal pools.
