Glamping in Tulbagh | Weekend Escapes in the Western Cape

It was our 3 year Wedding Anniversary this April, so a slight upgrade from the usual camping was in order.

We were looking for a semi-luxury, but still rustic, outdoor stay. We only had one night so it also had to be somewhere close. After a few searches across Patenorster, Hermanus, Robertson and the likes, we found this luxury tent in Tulbagh – roughly 140kms / a 1 hour 15min drive from Cape Town.

Luxury Tent 1 – Buffalo Driftt

This farm-style accommodation is called,  Buffalo Drift Tented Camp.
We were greeted in by a towering forest to the left and a citrus plantation to the right.

Our private braai area just outside the tent

With citrus trees in every direction, it was only fitting to enjoy a complimentary sundowner. Big thanks to The Gin Box SA for always knowing how to upgrade a travel date!! This month’s APRIL Gin Box was such a spoil, especially in this setting ! It’s so fun to just open one box and be welcomed by every possible garnish needed to create the perfect insta-shot, cocktail evening ;)!!

We decided to have 1 or 2 more down by the river. But whose counting…

Lots of dangling birds nests and dappled lighting 🙂

How we feel about the “Luxury” term?

This was definitely more luxurious than a normal safari tent, but we wouldn’t say it’s “luxury glamping”. What a few past google searches and Pinterest boards have told us, is that ‘luxury glamping’ involves Nespresso machine amenities, large free-standing baths on moroccan carpets and fairy lights – everywhere. So did we love this luxury tent – absolutely! But just set the right expectations, it’s not “luxury”, but rather upgraded camping.

For R700.00 a night, this is amazing value for money.
It also had a very large, double nossle shower – so a success either way!

Some Comments

The tent sleeps four (ideal for couples or small families) and you can bring your dog with! It is equipped with air-con and a heater. You can definitely swim in the river, but we personally recommend it as a cosy winter getaway. We would also recommend driving in to Tulbagh’s town – not only for some killer bakeries but also for the nearby wine farms and mountain passes along the way.
